Type of Valuation

At James Newman Jewellery, we understand the importance of safeguarding your most treasured pieces. That’s why we offer two distinct types of jewellery valuation services tailored to your needs.

  1. Official Valuations through the Birmingham Assay Office
For those looking for a formal, internationally recognised valuation, we partner with the Birmingham Assay Office. Their team of accredited experts meticulously assesses the quality and authenticity of your jewellery and watches, ensuring a comprehensive and authoritative valuation. Whether for insurance, resale, or inheritance purposes, this detailed appraisal provides peace of mind with a legally recognised certificate. With this service you will receive full printed & digital documentation of your valuation.

  2. James Newman Jewellery Appraisals
For customers who have purchased jewellery directly from us, we offer our own in-house appraisal service. While not an accredited valuation service, our expert team provides a professional appraisal based on the craftsmanship and design of our jewellery, offering a realistic assessment that’s suitable for most insurance purposes. With this service you will receive a digital PDF of your appraisal. Please note, this service is only for jewellery purchased directly from James Newman Jewellery and we cannot appraise items purchased from other retailers.

Why Should You Have Your Jewellery Valued?

Whether you’re insuring a precious piece, reassessing the value of a family heirloom, or simply curious about the worth of your pieces, a professional jewellery valuation gives you the clarity and protection you need. A well-documented valuation ensures you’re adequately covered should the worst happen—whether it’s loss, damage, or theft. Regular valuations are recommended every 3–5 years.

Valuations also bring clarity in the case of resale, probate, or family division. Whether passing down a piece to loved ones, settling an estate, or selling privately, an official valuation ensures fairness and transparency. By accurately assessing the worth of your jewellery, it helps preserve memories and avoid misunderstandings, ensuring both you and your family receive what’s rightfully owed.

Please Note: Additional cost for insured postage and packaging may be necessary if you are sending us your jewellery or we are returning it to you via post.

After you have purchased your chosen valuation, you can book in a Valuation Appointment with us to drop off your piece, likewise you can book an appointment before purchasing and pay in-store. If you are choosing an Appraisal through James Newman Jewellery we may be able to complete this without coming into store.

If you unsure which Valuation or Appraisal service is suitable for your needs please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.
